Road Captains
Road Captains are identified by fluorescent yellow vests on all group rides. They occupy front and rear positions and are responsible for the safety and flow of the group.
Group Riding Guidelines
General Riding
- Road Captains assisting on a group ride will be identified by a fluorescent yellow vest.
- When riding in a group, riders should maintain proper lane positioning, typically in a staggered formation with the lead rider on the left side of the lane.
- All riders should signal their intentions using hand signals as well as turn signals.
- Ride your own ride — never exceed your comfort level or skill level to keep up with the group.
Individual Responsibilities
- Rock River H.O.G. Chapter is a friendly organization; many individuals wave at other riders. This is optional — use the left hand while keeping a firm grip on the throttle.
- Each rider is responsible for the safe operation of their own motorcycle at all times.
- Riders are expected to comply with all traffic laws.
- Never ride under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Safety
- Each individual rider should be well rested before the start of a chapter ride. Fatigue is dangerous to yourself and everyone riding.
- All riders are strongly encouraged to wear full protective gear: helmet, jacket, gloves, boots, and eye protection.
- Inspect your motorcycle before every ride — tires, brakes, lights, and fluid levels.
Formation Riding
- Road Captains will occupy the front and rear positions of the chapter group ride.
- Riders should maintain a two-second following distance from the rider directly in front.
- Maintain staggered formation: odd-numbered riders ride on the left side of the lane; even-numbered riders on the right.
- Never ride side-by-side in the same lane (except when stopped).
- On curves, straighten to single file to allow greater turning clearance.
Freeway Group Riding
- When merging on the interstate, the Lead Road Captain will maintain approximately 50 mph until all riders are caught up and in tight formation.
- Riders should merge as a group when possible, entering in staggered formation.
- Maintain consistent speeds and avoid sudden braking.
